Unique Unity Candle Idea

Many couples decide to have a unity candle as a part of their wedding ceremony. The unity candle allows the bride and groom to take two flames to light one candle as a symbol of their unity and oneness together. This is such a special wedding tradition and you would not think that it could get anymore symbolic than the joining of the two flames as one. However, Pink Zebra

DIY Coffee Filter Flowers

Coffee filter flowers are not only super easy to make, they are a fun, creative way to add some homemade elements to your wedding day or bridal shower decor. You can purchase a box of 250+ coffee filters for less than $2.00, making this craft perfect for any budget. You only need a few materials and the instructions below and you will have a fun afternoon of crafting at your fingertips!

Materials You Need:

  • Several coffee filters (each flower will use 6)
  • Food coloring and a few shallow bowls for dying
  • Green pipe cleaners
  • Hot glue gun
  • Floral or masking tape
  • Stapler

The first step is to dye the coffee filters. Use the shallow bowls and fill then with water and then add the food coloring one drop at a time. Experiment with the colors. You can make them as dark or pastel as you like. Once you get the color the way that you want it, just dunk several of the coffee filters into the colored water and let them soak. You can dye more than one filter at a time, just make sure that the pile of filters soaks thoroughly. Once they are soaked to a color of your liking, squeeze the extra liquid out and separate the filters on a cooling rack. If you are not patient enough to let them air dry, you can put them in the microwave or in the oven on a low temperature to make them dry faster.

Time to make the flowers!

  1. Take 3 filters and fold them into quarters. Cut scallops around the edges to add dimension. Repeat this with 3 more filters. Remember that each flower uses a total of 6.
  2. Stack all 6 of the filters in the order that you want the colors to show. Now, scrunch the bottom up as shown in the top left photo filters 1
  3. Take the pipe cleaner and staple it with about 1.5 inches poking up above the stapler. (see photo above)
  4. Wrap the pipe cleaner around the bottom of the flower to help stabilize it.
  5. Open up the flower as much as you can. It won’t lay flat but you’ll need to know where the center is.
  6. Take the top layer and scrunch it up tight, squeezing the bottom of your flower (see below).coffee filters 2
  7. Continue scrunching each layer one at a time.
  8. As shown in the bottom right photo, start wrapping the bottom of the flower with about 18 inches of floral tape. Tack with a bit of hot glue if you need it.
  9. Wrap the pipe cleaner about 2 inches down with the floral tape, just enough for stability.
  10. Choose your favorite flowers and make a bouquet by bundling them together.
  11. Take one of the pipe cleaners and wrap tightly going up the stems to hold the top of your bouquet.
  12. Now take another pipe cleaner and continue wrapping until you get to the bottom of your stems.

Great DIY Wedding Hair Ideas

Aside from you actual wedding day, there are numerous wedding related events that you will want to look your best for without breaking your budget. Between all the wedding showers, parties, and celebrations, hiring someone to style your hair for each event is impractical. Below are two Hollywood inspired hairstyles that are really simple to recreate on your own. All you need are a couple of tools and these easy instructions.

Side Bun

This is a great traditional style with a twist. It is great in photos from all angles.

  1. Start with dry hair and divide it into small sections about two fingers wide. Curl each section with a 1-2 inch barrel curling iron.
  2. Mist each curl with hair spray then run a paddle brush through your hair to break up the curls.
  3. Sweep your hair to the left and divide it into three sections. Twist the first two sections together and roll and pull into a lose bun. Wrap the last section around the bun and pin into place.
  4. Spritz with frizz control spray to get rid of flyaways and to give your hair extra hold for the evening. For extra style, add a headband or a couple ofdecorative bobby pins.

Imperfect Ponytail

Messy and imperfect hairstyles are HOT now. You don’t have to worry about lumps and bumps or your hair looking slightly messy because that is the trend.

  1. Apply a dollup of styling mousse on your palms and evenly spread it through towel-dried hair to both tame frizz and boost shine.
  2. For added volume, flip your hair upside down and spritz the roots of your hair with a texturizing spray.
  3. Loosely braid your hair and let it air-dry to create a very natural, wavy texture. Undo the braid and break up the waves by running your fingers through your hair. Gently tease the crown for height.
  4. Pull a section of hair from each side of your face to the back of your head. Allow one section of hair to overlap the other and secure it by pinning into place. Continue this all the way down the back until all of your hair is pinned into a ponytail shape. Pull out strands to frame your face for a soft, feminine look.
  5. Finish this messy look by misting a thin coast of hair spray in an even, all-around motion throughtout your hair to ensure that the style stays in place.

Making your own dried acorns is super easy and very cheap. You can spend as much as $45 dollars in the stores buying acorns or fake ones for various projects but can make them for less than $7!

It is important to treat and dry the acorns before using them in vases or other projects because you want to make sure that they last through the season and are bug free.

You can pick as many acorns as you want or need from right outside in your yard. After picking, you will want to wash any dirt off them. This can be done in any household sink with the help of some water and old rags. Be sure to throw away any acorns that have bug holes or signs of rot. Don’t be discouraged if the acorn tops comes off throughout this process; they can be glued back on later.

Once washed, bake the acorns and any tops in the oven for 2-3 hours at 200 degrees. This makes sure anything inside is killed.

Let them cool completely before you start handling them. After they are cooled, hot glue the tops back on to the acorns.

To preserve the acorns and make them last longer, spray them with a can of clear acrylic spray. Spray them with an even coat on one side, let them dry for an hour, flip them over and spray the other side. Remember to spray at an angle to make sure you gets the sides of the acorns as well. Let them dry for another hour and them use them in whatever projects you’d like! We love the idea of filling a glass container with them and putting a votive candle in the middle (pictured to the left)! For more complete instructions and photos, click here.

A big trend in wedding decorations is the use of whimsical signs. These can feature sweet phrases, poems, or Bible verses, as well as wedding dinner menus and a schedule of wedding day events. The signs are a super easy way to fill empty spaces around your reception hall, ceremony site, or outdoor areas and can be very informative to your guest. You can even have a great time making the signs homemade! Have a craft party with your bridesmaids and have each girl make a different sign. In one night you will have made a large amount of decorations and then you can all compare ideas and, of course, see whose is the best!

Below are some different examples of the types of signs that have been used in real weddings before. You can make or buy signs to look exactly like these or just use them as inspiration for your own unique ideas. The signs you make should express the formality, theme, and color scheme of your wedding but also embody who you and your groom are as a couple.
